Lost in the woods
That's say that I am lost in a mountain where unkown beasts are dominanted. The first thing that I will do is sit down and take a deep breath and calm myself down. Since studies have shown that accidents are mostly likely to happen when a person is panicing or uneasy. After that, I will look at the sun or the moon or the stars for direction. Perhaps climb a a small peak and tried to peak down and search for signs of human life or civilization. Than, I would grab a stick of some sort, sharpen it, and start to march down hill. I will also gather the foods I encountered with to make sure that I won't pass out. I will stop around the time of early noon and tried to make a fire( if this mountain is a tall one, but I am assuring that it is or else this kind of accidents could have been easily avoided). I might try to use mirrors or watches to reflect the sun light and gather twigs and dead brenchs. This will take a while, and by the time I finally got myself a nice little fire, it might already be late afternoon. I would eat and perhaps pile up some twigs to make a temperary shelter for me to rest in before the following day. Being lost in a mountain is of course very different from being lost in a dessert. In the mountain you have more chance of survival, yet you have to do it independently. While in a dessert, it is much easier to be found. There are also less predetors in a dessert while a mountain is often like a zoo itself. A zoo with bears, porcupines...etc.

Personal Assets
Brian had used a number of personal assets in order to survive in the canadian wilderness. And the most significant out of all of them are independence, problem solving, optimism, and bravery. You may not have agreed with my reasonings now, which is why I will go over them one by one with details and supports from the novel. Though most people don' t agree, Brain was independent in the story, or at least relativity independent. How can he not if he is going to survive( I didn't finish the book, but I'm assuming that he did survive. Or else the book would have been much thinner) ? In the complete wilderness, Brain had to rely on his own with no company of any kinds( at least not yet), a dependent person would never be able to do that. Brain also had excellent problem solving skills. He fought against nature and tried to solve the problems within them such as fighting against mosquitoes and the setting itself. Brain was also relatively optimistic, for he had not given up or stayed long in the zone of self-pitying which a lot of us would have. And at last, Brian was also demonstrated courage in the woods( I don't think I would have to explain why). As in for me, I'm not really sure of my greatest assets. Yet, if I really have to name some,I would say that they are: peace-loving, calm, and hard working( for most of the time anyway). The personnel asset that may save me in the wilderness might be peace-loving and calmness.

Solving Problems
Since I haven't encountered any real sublime problems in real life, previous knowledge of mine are pretty much useless, in the matter of fact, in daily life basis. Yet, if I really had to name something, I suppose I would say my previous knowledge in math had benefited me . Having some basic math skills allowed me to count numbers, and pay money with full knowledge of what I am doing. It also allowed me to measure regular and irregular objects and calculate a person 's speed. I wouldn't say that this skill was special though, since it is kind of expected out of any normal person. My Chinese language skills had also made communicating in Taiwan plausible, and it is a previous, actually more background knowledge for me to apply. Without the ability to speak Chinese I would have to rely on my body gestures to communicate. That wouldn't be a really good idea since I am sort of a timid person, and it would cause a lot of trouble. There was also a time when my English skills benefited me in real life. There was this one time when me and my family took a vacation in California and for some weird reasons my brother locked himself inside our room. Since my parents were out somewhere, I had to go to the lobby and got another extra pair of keys. The language I used was of course, English. And that is the only real real life situation I can think of at this moment.
Long Life
Ever noticed the farewells in many countries contained a special wishing. People tends to wish each other a numerous amount of things such as " get well", " many God be with you"...etc, yet the most commonly used expression to express an internal wish that almost all life forms yearned for is " Live a long life!" The wanting of living long, or perhaps forever is perfectly normal, since all life forms were designed to live. And to keep them all motivated, there had to be a fire burning deep inside that motivates everyone to seek live-hood and will. We've all worked hard to accomplish goals of all sorts in life, and it is simply too painful to have to let it go. Now turning back to the story " The Secret", I don't think it is particularly fair to keep a secret that could have lasted more lives to a couple of rich nobles and scientists. That doesn't mean I support the idea of letting the secret out though. Imaging six billion people being immortal, never ever replaced. After a couple of years, the population itself will reproduce and the population number will double. Soon, the moon itself would be overcrowded and humans would have to face problems of all kinds. The ugliness of the human nature will be exposed as most struggled to survive in the world full of competition. Death is painful, yet natural. Beginnings comes with ends, that's simply a universal rule in which everyone smart or dumb, tall or short, would have to obey.

The secret
Henry become suspicious when he's visiting the moon when his visits to the director became rare and none of the other scientists would inform about any thing he asked. I suppose Henry's suspicions are reasonable since I would have had the same if I was in his shoes. Anyway, what the scientists had been trying to keep from Henry was the news of life spams being doubled on the moon. That- was what Dr. Hasting had been trying to keep from Henry and the rest of the people on Earth. For those who do not recall, I will give you a brief overview of this part of the story. Henry was informed to meet the director at the main lab and he went. There, the short gray scientist grabbed a hamster out of its cage and questioned Henry " What is this?" Henry answered, " A hamster, the commonest of the lab animals." . " Yes, except for this one is already five years old." " And?" " The normal life spam for hamsters is only two." If you would like to know how the rest of the story goes, you would have to check the book yourself. The reason that Dr. Hasting wanted to keep his research secret is due to the fact that he doesn't all people on Earth to come cramming onto the moon.

Setting and Plot
Settings plays a significant role in a story. Setting basically created the story's plots, and characters from different settings may behave diffriently, and THAT marks the differenence between the two stories. Taking two enraged families who has extreme hatred for each other for an instance, the way the famlies interacted with each other will be very differnt in different settings. If the famlies existed at the time of 2010, there probably wouldn't be much fighting going on. Since physical violence is not encouraged in our society today, and doing so may expose both families to the dangers of society law enforces. Reasonable members of the family might decide to call it truce and maybe they will become friends, who knows? Even if the families did got engaged in a negative physical interactions, gun powders will be used and that can cause severe deaths and injuries. On the otherhand, if the story had took place in perhaps the 1959s in the city of Verona, it would be a complete differnent story. Due to the lack of polices and direct law enforcements, the families could have broken into a fight. Instead of carrying guns, the people would be carrying swords and sheilds in a body armor. At this time, the love of the children from both sides can lead to a great tragedy( Sound famalier? This happened in the tradegy: Romeo and Juliet.). And that will be the end of my journal for today.

Writing is Difficult
Writing, to most people is an agonizing and aimless concept . For them( especially students) writing seemed to be an endless struggle, a battle between them and the words, a battle they are almost certain they will lost. There are minorities, however, whose minds were simply different from the rest. and they can find writing interesting. Good writers are often great story tellers, they can make up fascinating stories that sung infants to sleep, stories that teenagers dream of when sitting in front of their piles of homework, stories adults thought of during the absence of their loved ones, and stories in which elders smile upon as they set in their rocking chair staring out a window, stories that lasts forever. Writing is simply a way for the storytellers to spread their stories. It is the most efficient tool for one's story to become popular. Most writers have extreme dislikes for the subject " writing" , since writing itself is tedious, but the stories behind the boringness motivates them to go on. I suppose Ray Bradbury have similar opinion as mine. He may have extreme dislikes for the concept of writing, yet was fascinated by the arts of storytelling. Which is the reason he chose writing as his career. And as time went by, he got better and better , and one day he might suddenly realize and let out, " Hey, it's not so bad!" I wouldn't say that I would choose writing as my career since judging from my writing so far, I have zero talent. My imagination doesn't flow the way some writers do . And my grammar and spelling mistakes can haunt people even in their dreams. That would be the difference between a talent, and a non talent I suppose.

Chronological Order
The story indicates a sequence of events that had happened on August 4, 2060 when humans become extinct. The main events that took place thoughout the story are: The clock called for breakfast. In the kitchen, the oven let out a heavy sigh and injected perfectly made toasts, eggs, and coffees. Than, after sensing the dinning time had past, robots cleaned up the food which had never been touched. Those robots than cleaned up the spotless house. Just around noon, the family's dog who had fortunatly or unfortuantly survived the nuclear war wailed and the house let it in. It circled the house looking for signs of life, but found none. Finally, he laid down and died. After some hours of the dog's death, the house caught on fire. Though it did everything it could to save itself, it still got burnt to the ground and exploded into ashes. There will never be such a house again, because the originators had been long gone. What a pity that it took months to build a house, perhaps years to build one as great as this one, yet only seconds to destroy it. What the author was trying to indicate is sometimes humans gets to a certain point when they thought being greedy is an ok thing . This thought costed the entire human population's lives. Yet, humans 's inventions which had been made to obtain human uses lived on. Yet it won't last. The destruction of the house marked the complete extinction of the human kind. They simply dissapeared, forever. With no glories, no tributes, no commemeration, nothing. Nothing but a distance, sad memory.

Irony
In the story " There will come soft rains" , humans lived in an ideal life in which their every need was easily satisfied. Yet, they ended up destroying themselves in a nuclear war. What would lead people into war and destroy each other? Well, the answer is quite simple. In fact, it had been the reason that any war or battle was started in the first place. The reason is called greed. Humans have a flaw, or I guess you can say a superior trait , and that is called greed. Greed makes you felt that nothing is satisfying and you want more and more things. Once you got more and more things, you want even more things. Greed can also be a good thing though, without greed, humans would live like other animals and be perfectly contented with a full belly and a nice good sleep. Yet, too much greed will lead humans into a war that ended up as a self-destruction. I felt that the story itself was pretty ironic, since humans created technologies and a satisfying world, but ended up dying because of it. Humans created nuclear bombs, but ended up being killed by it. This kind of situation is of course applicable to our world today. Humans ended up being killed or ruined by the things they have most, or create. For example, a rich man can ended up treasuring it's money so much that it killed him to simply leave them, or spend a penny( this actually had happened before). Humans invented thousands of weapons, yet used it to kill each other. Ironic huh?
Thankful
The word thankful meant to be pleased and relieved, and to express gratitude towards your position right now. That, is basically what the word thankful meant to me. It is to be happy with who you are and what you have been experiencing without complaint no matter how hard it might have been. I am thankful to a lot of things. I am thankful to my parents, who had raised me up and sent me to an expensive american school to receive better education. I am also thankful to certain classmates in my class who made the classes a lot more interesting than it could have been. I am thankful to my friends as well, who had helped me along the hardships I've gone through. As in for the downhill side, I am not thankful for the home works I have to do, the science test next week, and the english test tomorrow. I am not particularly thankful to our journal time music either. Others are thankful to a lot of other things. Some are thankful to friends, good, technology, sleep, and some are simply thankful towards their good luck. Many religious people are thankful towards God/Gods/Goddess/Goddesses, which is the reason that many say a prayer before they eat, sleep, or at the crack of dawn.

My invention
Ray Bradbury's story "There will come soft rains" is full of imaginary inventions of the future designed to save labor and make life more convenient for humans. Think of something that you have to do on a regular basis. (Chores, homeowrk, carrying books) that you would like to make easier and more convenient. THen design an invention that would help you do the work, or even do the work for you. Describe it in detail: what is it made of? What does it look like? What are its functions? How do you use it? What warnings go along with it?
I wouldn't describe myself as an inventor of any kind. I don't have those brilliant light bulbs that popped out from time to time the ways those brilliant scientists do. Yet, if I really have to, I guess I would deisgn a light device that can lift humans into the air. The device will be small enough to fit in your pocket, and once you clicked the start button, it will simply take you automatically into the air. It will listen to your instructions of where to, how to...etc verbally. Anyone can control it, it's simple. Maybe even simpler than stuff like walking and running. I think that would be an interesting invention. Imagining the elders and babies all drifting in the air, there will be no inconvinency due to a person's age. ELders or children wouldn't have to sit around all day waiting dor busy adults to pick them up, or get them where they're going. Instead, they can simply travel on by themselves. This invention will came out as a packet with a flygin device, a bungee jacket( designed that no one will get hurt falling to the gruond and also to keep you warm but very light0, a helmet, and a pair of sneakers that go with it ( for decoration).

New Technology
Life after a couple centuries will be a unimaginable world with many technologies people today can't even dream of. Judging from the rate of technology advances, people will have robots taking care of their everyday life. Those robots will be able to detect a person's brainwaves, and present the person's needs. People's mouths will be only used for eating, breathing, and perhaps chatting. Their bodies will be plainly used for decoration and entertainment( I mean sports, dancing, stuff like that). It will be similar to what had happened in the Disney movie Walle when humans simply lie around all day and concentrate on nothing but sleep, eat, and chatting. Ok, maybe not as bizarre, I mean there is still gravity, so it's not like we're all going to turn into giant meatballs or something. Yet, the percentage of overweight will definitely rise. Which, will cause people to have a different perspective about beauty. They might consider fat women pretty and skinny women ugly, who knows? Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. The standards changes from time to time. Finally, people will get to a point that they are so dependent on technology that they refuse to learn anything themselves. It won't be hard to imagine. If you were to brought a person two hundred years ago here, he/she would have been amazed that people don't know how to farm, raise cattle, trade with foreigns who may be from the arabian peninsula...etc. We don't have the skills they do because they are no longer needed in our everyday life. Why? Because technology had done it for us.
Setting as Character
Though not particularly common, setting can act as a character. The most common way for it to act so is by acting like an opposing force directly. The author would have to add constant details of the setting instead of simply telling how the character( not the setting) fought against it. There is also another way of expressing the setting as a character, and that would be simply writting it as if it was a real character. The story can be simply a discription of the place, like where we are. Our holt reader had an excellent example( I forgot the story title) of a story that described what during the year of 2060 will be like. Throughout the whole story, ther wasn't a single living character. Just the setting, speaking it's own story. The house, the clock, the stove...those normal settings and objects were now acting alive. Telling us that a house can function without a person/family and how. I think that the story was pretty interesting, which simply proved that settings can be characters too, whom can create fascinating stories. Using Setting as a character gives readers a fresh and detailed image of the story, but you have to be good at it to not put the readers to sleep.

Compare and Contrast Dogs
My friend had two dogs, one named Snowy and one named Smarty. Both have fur as white as snow, and dark bright eyes. Snowy and Smarty looked extremely alike and the only way to tell them from each other, is to look at their left paw. Snowy 's paw is perfect with white fur, while Smarty had a round black dot on the middle of it's left toe. The dogs were born with two seconds difference and was of course, raised together. Their personality had huge differences though, even when their appearances are similar. Snowy is quite, calm, and stable. Always acting high and noble, as if she is a princess of some sort. She is not arrogant, however, just simply quite and yeah, sometimes a little self-flattering. She is the treasure of the family due to her perfectness. Smarty, on the other hand was athletic, loud, and impatient. Always running around the house/garden, chasing after butterflies( he likes yellow butterflies in particular), knocking over chairs and barking hysterically. He also enjoyed playing small tricks on people, such as hiding their shoes ( or spit into them if you made him mad), bitting their jackets and so on. Snowy is the house favorite, and she often despise her brother. But when her brother got more positive attnetion than she did, she would scuff and toss her head as if she didn't care. Smarty wines when he wanted to get people's attention, he rolled over and shook his tail. He tried his best, unlike Snowy who was used to being the best. The two dogs have obviously different personalities even when they were raised together, infect, their personalities are almost exactly the opposite. They are the treasures of the family. Though sadly, Smarty passed away just last year during Halloween when he got sick eating a candy of some sort and died. Though Snowy acted as if she couldn't care less, we heard wines and howls during late night accessions.

Knowledge of Dogs
The human civilization is a forgetful, lazy but fast improving civilization. As humans sped up the line, inventing thousands and millions inventions that will make our lives easier. Lucrative inventions had not only benefit us, but inventors as well. They have to do the best that they could, thought of all the ways to beat their opponents and gain profit FAST. As they set in their offices counting the load of bills, and smiling broadly at their success, they forgot one thing: Some where on this world, someone was suffering, because of them( not because they succeeded, but because maybe they have cheated or something? I know this is confusing, but I really have no idea of what to write about). THAT is an example of the knowledge that we have loss while we improve, it is the quality of compassion and sympathy. They are, however, the main principle that all organisms should follow. The dogs still have these old precious knowledge, and they can teach us. Ever seen on the news that the dogs dashed into the fire and saved their owners( Go google it if you don't believe me), at that moment they were not thinking of themselves, but their owner's life. That dog had not only saved his owner's life, but also taught the world the importance of scarification. I never actually had a pet before, so I have really never learned from an animal of any kind. Except for humans( If counting my brother), but I wouldn't say that I got some deep thoughts from them.

Describe a Place You Know
A place that I knew about very well will be the family room in my house. The room was in standard quality and warm and cozy. The floor is wooden, the color of dark wood and is relatively soft at the same time. On top of the floor is a snow white rug the color of um...snow, which is incredibly soft and smoothing. A white sofa was located in the center of the carpet and where two pillows the color of blood red( many wondered why the color was chosen, why not something smoothing that fits the atmosphere of the room? Well, I don't know. But what I DO know is that those two pillows were often used as an object our family used to express frustration. I have no idea how this relates to the topic today, but I figured that there might be some intelligent people out there who might figure out). There is a black digital TV with a hard texture, three computer tables with three PCs(one, sadly is out of function for a long time), and an abandoned brown stereo, which was now covered with dusts and powders. No one ever goes near it. The room often filled with the smell of roses, and lavender since out balcony is just outside the family room and my mom likes to plant over there.

The Setting of “In Trouble”
Describe the setting of the story “In Trouble”. Use as many sensory details as you can. Is setting important in this story? If so, explain why. What role does the setting play in creating tension in the plot?
As Mr. McCool had stated in class, settings are very important elements of a story. Without a setting, there would be no story. Settings does not answer only the question where, but also include the sensory details as well. Taking the story " In Trouble" for instance, the setting created a wonderful scene of coldness , snow and ice. It was described that your throat might actually bleed and your hand might turn puple than fall off. The setting itself creates suspense to make the reader want to read on. So obviously, the setting of this story is very important. The setting of this story described the place, and creates suspense which makes the reader want to read on. And of course, the setting also created a great amount of tension in the plot. Those descriptive words held absolute power, holding the us, compelling us ( anyone finding this phrase familiar? hint: The landlady. If you still have no idea of what I am talking about, go read the holt reader)to read on and find out what had happened. The setting is one of the elements that makes stories succesful, this one in particular. And that will be the end of my entry. Thank you!

The influence of Setting
There was this one story that I had read about from our fantastic Holt Reader about Harriet Tubman, an African American who risked her own life to escort slaves to freedom. Her personality, of course, took credit for actions. However, I think one of the biggest influences, or to be more concise, what had been really responsible for her bravery will be the setting. Harriet Tubman was born during the time when slavery was legal, and slaves had little rights and can not stand up for themselves. The setting created Harriet Tubman's heroic actions, for she obviously would not have done the same one hundred year later. The setting of the story created an partial environment where freedom was out reach for slaves, which created a lot of complications. That is also the reason for Harriet Tubman risked her own life. I suppose setting played a really important role in a story, and we won't have a good story without it. Wouldn't we? Basically, this is all I have to say about the influence of setting. I guess I kind of blame Mr. McCool to give us such a challenging topic to write about. Still, this is important and it really made us think. So I guess it is a success after all.

Settings
All of a sudden, I was surrounded by the sound of silence. Figures roamed around me, all wearing an expressionless mask and had their heads held high. Deadly fear gripped my heart. That was when I broke into a deadly run. I ran as fast as I could, yet was greeted by stony faces no matter where I went. Suddenly, the solid ground suddenly arouses to greet me, and I opened my mouth into a silent scream...
That is not my story, and the reason that I bothered to write that is because I honestly have nothing to write about. And a make-believe story just sounded much more interesting than everyday life. I am going to go ahead and give you a boring answer anyway. I guess the setting that had the most effect on me is my house, in my neighborhood. Since, that will be the place that made up who I am. It is a nice neighbor hood with white houses and a clear blue sky. You can hear birds chirping, though they don’t sound so wonderful. You can taste fresh air, and wind ( a lot of wind). There are many plants in this neighborhood, and most of them are soft precious flowers that everyone treasured.

What I like about this class
I wad not surprised that Mr. McCool would assign us students some things like this after we expressed out frustration during the last entry. .I guess everyone needs a break and fresh air. So, this is what I like about English Class. First of all, the sanctuary of the class was pretty good, with fresh air and all. Note that I am not being sarcastic here. It is hard to maintain a good environment, and some teachers haven't been able to manage it. For, they will have dirty rooms with dirt all over the place, causing students to sneeze and sniff A lot of the class rooms are also pretty stuffy, and students often fall asleep under that "warm" atmosphere. This class, however is different and I like it. Another thing that I like about this class will be the tone of our teacher. Instead of having a plain, robotic voice, our teacher's voice is emotional and playful so it is hard for students to fall asleep the way they did in some other class. And the most ironic thing about this is that those teachers never understood that the student did not meant to do such a thing.
What I don't Like About This Class
I felt rathered ashamed for not doing this assignment when it was due, but doesn't matter cause I am going to go ahead and write it anyway. For, I have so many things to express. There are "several" things in which I disliked about this class, and one of them is having is the unnecessary confusion when turning in homework and assignments. When students were assigned a homework assignment, the most major problem that they should be worrying about is wither or not if their assignment was 1. on time. 2. has the right content. This class, however is different. Student's work actually get sent back and marked incomplete for not sending in with the correct file name, tagged the correct tag( and sometimes it is careless mistakes that no one can avoid), or had the correct title. It just isn't necessary, other teachers have managed to receive homework without these rules. Taking Ms. Lucy- our expository writing teacher for an instance, she had around three or four classes, yet she still managed WITHOUT any of those strict rules. Therefore, showed that it IS manageable if the teacher is organized. No offense, please don't take this personally. Another issue of this class is that the books, stories and literature we interacted are not related to our lives, which makes the class far less interesting than it could have been. Another thing that I disliked about this class is that there are far too many answer-the-question kind of homework and far too less homework projects. I suppose it is understood by the majority that projects much more fun than sheet questions. Mr. Lex, our history teacher gave us a lot of history projects. And the student's participation and learning from the assignments are great. And besides, don't you agree that projects are far more interesting to LOOK at or GRADE than a regular homework assignment? So I suppose it will be a win- win for all of us.

Jackson v. Frietchie
Barbra Frietchie is a powerful old woman who is brave, noble, and very strong-minded. She stood up for what she thinks it is right, even through times that she have to do so alone. Although she is a highly admirable character, I do not agree with her actions when she met the confederate troops. I know, that this sounds strange. How can anyone disagree her actions? The reason is very simple: She could have gotten all of her town killed. What if Stonewall Jackson was in a terrible mood and didn't want to waste his time hearing her speech? He could have killed all of them, and of course, all of the flags would have been torn apart, the way the people the that town would be. She, was putting the life of many at sake. So, I for one think that her actions aren't the BEST way solve her problem. I still admire her courage, though, for it isn't easy to be the only one waving your flag in front of your enemies, and it gets especially scary when you have to do it alone. Stonewall Jackson, on the other hand is also a powerful man with a heart as hard as stone. For, he had killed millions on the battle field, how can he not be? He is also brave, and very much strong minded, he is pretty noble as well. For, not killing an enemy who was obviously against him. That was noble, thinking of not only himself but majority before him. He could have felt angry that the old dame embarrassed him, and killed her. He didn't though, which is what makes him admirable.
Frietchie v Jackson
Do the right thing
I suppose I have to make this clear at the beginning of my entry, so there will be no confusions and misleads. First of all, I forgot to bring my journal entry notebook home, and the journal wasn't posted on the prompt page. Which is the raeson that I am looking up another classmates's blog, inorder to identify the question, and so it might sound similar to the class mate's blog. Please note that I am not copying. So, that will be my confession. Now, back to the entry. There are a couple of heros we have discussed, and they are Harriet Tubman, Barbra Frietchie and Stonewall Jackson. All very famous known for their courge of doing the right thing. There is Harriet Tubman, risking her own life and freedom just to save a bunch of black slaves that she don't know. There is also Barbra Frietchie who dared to wave her country's flag in front of her enemy. There is also Stonewall Jackson, who had fought millions and had also killed billions choosing to spare, or respect to be more excact the old enemy's surporter, because of her courge. These people are all doing what we called the right thing. The heros that I had written about last time are Harriet Tubman and Brad Cohen, since they both have to fight against extreme conditions, but they stood up to meet their challenges instead of shying away from it. Which was a brave and noble act to do. As in for me, I wouldn't excactly call myself a hero since I had not done something brave or noble. But I try to do the right thing whenever I can.

Standing up for Your Beliefs
Heros are people, who are admired or idealized for courage, outstanding acheivents or noble qualities. There are a lot of heros in history, all having to stand up for their beliefs. Which, can be hard. Harriet Tubman, for example had to leave her comfomity and freedom behind, back to the land of slavery that she had once tried so hard to escape just to save African slaves. Reason? Because she believed that all men should be able to have freedom, be the master of their own life. Even a black slave.( I am not discriminatnig anyone or anything, just saying out of the point of view of people at that time. Nothing personel.) And she stood up for her believes. That was a terribly brave act to do, which is why people named her a hero. Another example would be an award winning teacher named Brad Cohen who had a disease that caused him to make weird noises and sound that he do not want to make, and the worse thing about this is that he can not control it. Well, Brad wants to be a teacher but 24 schools rejected him. Yet, he stood up to his belief of being a great teacher and not to be defeated by his disease, he continued on until a school finally accepted him. He later won an award for his great teaching. As in for me, I am not religious or anything so I don't really have anything to stand up for. But if I really have to state one, I would say to have democrecy in countries. Give people the right to vote, be educated...etc. So we can have a more succesful goverment and comminity.

Cinderella Story
Though a lot of you may have thought that your life and the people around you are too boring to actually have such a dramatic life, I do and please note that I am not making this up. She was a popular high schooler when we first met, with cherish laughs and confident smiles. Her eyes are clear blue, and her hair were typical honey blond. She fitted right into the image of a popular american beauty. That was two years ago, before she had cancer and had to go through radiotherapy. Which had costed her oh so dearly, she lost her hair, and of course her perfect image. Going through radiotherapy is hard, you don't only expereince physical and mental pain, your confidence and personality may be also lost. As you look into the mirror and discovered your hair comming looser and looser everyday, and you beauty gone. She, ofcourse like all people had to go through that. " I often cried under my blankets when nobody was looking," she once told me. " That sure was a terrible time." Even when the procedure was painful, she gone through it and her cancer was finally cured. I still had the image of her, skinny and fragile with a blue New york Yankees( She doesn't have a favorable sports team, however. She just wore it because her mom gave it to her.) hat, her eyes shinnig with determination as she existed the hospital printed in my head. She later graduated from the university of Brown and was now a succesful engineer. Neither the story of Cinderella or the story of fighting cancer can relate to my own life. But I did heard many stories about them though.

Hero Biography
Write a brief biographical sketch of someone you think is a hero. Include where and when the person was born, where the person lives (or lived), and what he or she does (or did). Explain why this person is a hero to you.
There were many whom I thought as a hero, but when it came to writing an entry, my top choise would be Harriet Tubman, who also happened to be the person I am going to write about today. Harriet Tubman was born in 1822 on the estern shore of Maryland. Her habitate later was never current, but she had lived in New York, California, Ortario, and of course Maryland- the place in which she was born. Harriet Tubman did something that was very so shockinh and severe that took a lot of courge- She helped slaves escape to the promise land( Canada). And how did she do that? She did that by constructing the underground railroad. The undergound railroad, the very definition for Harriet Tubman's bravery had stood forevery in a African American's heart and it always will in the future. If you happen to not know what an undergound railroad is, it is a passageway( just many paths, not nessicarly a passageway) that helped slaves to freedom. Which obviously, is Canada. I think the reason that Harriet Tubman is a hero, is because her having a brave and loving heart. Having a brave and loving heart isn't easy. You have to risk what you positioned, and sacrificed for the greater good. And most people just can't focus on anything outside of their lives, and that set them down to the level of normals. Which is the reason that when a hero came among us, they shine brightly. They shine brightly in the dark.

What is a hero?
The definition of heroism was a person or thing with courage, determination, and willingness of scarification. A hero is obviously someone who contained those qualities. Though heros are rare, they are starting to pile up through the many centuries. Yet there are a couple of them in which I thought was particularly outstanding. Harriet Tubman is an excellent example of heros and heroism. Leaving what she had fought for all her life behind, and back to the land of slavery that she had extreme dislike for just to liberate the slaves. Was she scared? Of course she was. Yet, there she was inciting others to continue when she was dejected. Risking her own life, just to escort the slaves to the land unspoiled by slavery- Canada. Or the promise land. Another heroic character will be Johnny Cade from the all time classic- The Outsiders. Go ahead and laugh all you want, but I am not being lazy and I did thought seriously and considered my options of heros. Johnny Cade was a really heroic character who had died tragically at the end of the story at the age of sixteen. And you have to admit that wasn't the best age to die. He had sacrificed his own life for a bunch of kids whom he do not know. That was pretty heroic, which makes him a hero in which many readers admired. It also made him one of the most popular heros people tends to choose when they are picking a hero out of that novel to write a term paper( And I have first hand information for that). Though there are many other heros, they all have some common characteristics. It is the fact that they all had courage, determination, and willingness of scarification. So it doesn't matter of where you are from, or what your culture background was as long as you have a true heart I suppose.

Leaving Everything Behind
Think about another period in history when people were forced to leave behind everything they knew and loved. How would their experience compare with the experiences of Harriet Tubman and her eleven fugitives? Use your Quickwrite (October 5) as a resource.
When the Roman empire was experiencing it's most brilliant and gallant stage, It seemed as if every single human who had lived in Rome was benefited with the incredible wealth, strong military, and most of all the the sparks of glories of the prime leading empire. Yet, not everyone was content about this . In order to consolidate the Rome's incredible power, the Romans needed wealth, brilliant minds, and workmanship. The first two needs were easy to satisfy by the Romans themselves, yet the last one is not. Where can they get so many people to work under a hot sun, or through frosty winters according to their own will? The Roman emperors scratched their chins and figured out this, " Ah! If I can't get Romans to work according to their own will, I can get slaves. They don't have rights. No wages.". So as the Romans took over more and more lands, they captured more and more slaves, these slaves were brought back to Rome to do the hardest, or most unwilling jobs the Romans do not want to do themselves. These slaves were experiencing experiences similar to Harriet Tubman. Having to leave everything they knew and loved behind. Only they are brought away by force, while Harriet Tubman and her eleven fugitives actually do have a choice. Though they may not think they do. Another difference between them would be the fact that Harriet Tubman and her eleven fugitives are outlaws, which meant walking on the feilds of fearsome for every single minute. Facing the possibility of being captured, and hanged in the most horrible way everyday. On the other hand, once the slaves are with the Roman army, they're lives are pretty much safe. They will still be in harsh condition, but the Romans won't kill them unlessl they felt like they have( want) to.

The promise land
How was Harriet Tubman like Moses in the Bible? What was her promise land? If you don't know about Moses, do an internet research to find out about him.
Both Harriet Tubman and Moses was the liberator of an enslaved culture who lacked a leader. Which may be the reason that both of them became the leader of their original culture. Both Harriet Tubman and Moses were already free yet both came back to the land that was most dangerous for them, risking everything they have just to accomplish what they think is right. Or their goals, I suppose. They are both responsible people who had a string sense of right and wrong, and allowed their conscious to lead them for always. I suppose the biggest factor that the two people share is their compassion and love for their kind. They simply can not stand watching others suffer, while they the people who could have done something about it sit back and do nothing. Moses's promise land was at Jerusalem and Harriet Tubman's promise land was at Canada. Even when the places seemed very far apart, they are actually not, since both places held what the people ad been looking for- freedom.

Why risk your life?
Why might someone like Harriet Tubman, who was already free, risk her life to lead other people to freedom?
There can be lots of reasons for a free woman like Harriet Tubman to risk her life and freedom inorder to lead others to freedom. There can be a lot of explanations. But what occured to me as the main center reason for Harriet Tubman to outbeat her fears and help others, had something to do with her personality. And what character traits is that? Well, I would say a strong sense of right and wrong, sympathy and courage is what had lead her bacl to the land of slavery. Where she had to face the possibility of being captured for every single day. Why? you may ask. Well, that is an excellent question. I suppose it is because of her own sympathy and old compasion towards her old homeland and friends. So as she enjoyed her freedom, she will always thought of her poor brothers and sisters back at her homeland being tourtured to death, yet still have never yet tasted the wonderful taste of freedom. While she, having full knowledge of how wrong slavery stood in the fresh air of freedom, looking at her fellow family and friends suffocate in the water of isolation. Bound by the manacles of slavery. How can she bare through that? There must have been something that she can do. And the solution she came up with for saving black slaves were constructing the undergound railroad. Which helps the slaves to freedom. In conclusion, Harriet Tubman helped the slaves because of her sympathy, guilt, her sense of right and wrong, but mostly her love and compassion to all African Americans. That is what drove her forward, she is risking everything she had for others, and all attanding one purpose: To gain freedom. They will do everything they can to fight their harsh condition, for the sake of freedom.

For the Sake Of Freedom
The logical definition in which you will find in a dictionary for the word freedom is- the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. Freedom is a lot more than that though. It is the right to control your life, and yourself. Without freedom, a person would be like a puppet, hanging silent and motionless with strings attached all over them. That, obviously is not a great feeling to have. Everyone wants freedom, yet not many have the courage to admit that. Still, looking back in history, you can still see some brave, and noble acts people had endured for the sake of freedom. One of the examples would be Harriet Tubman and the bunch of African Americans who had ran off with her. For the sake of freedom, they had left their conformity behind. Going off to a place of unknown and being in danger at all times. Facing their difficulties, and fears with an intrepid heart and their hopes of a bright future with freedom. What had people endured because their freedom was taken away? WIthout freedom, people lost the right to think and act as they may. And just as I had stated in the beginning, they lost control of both their lives and themselves. Just like a puppet, without a soul or a heart. Without their right to actually live their own life, and make decisions themselves. Everyone has a right to be whoever they wanted to be, and that is what everyone deserved. And people will fight to the end for that, for the sake of freedom.

What happens?
As most people would have guessed, the tea was poisoned. N After a short period of their little tea sessions, Billy's eyes were suddenly opened to the negative elements of things instead of the positive. " What a terrible tragedy that our world has became," he said with heavy envy. " How am I suppose to live in a terrible world like this?" " Oh, is it dear?" The Landlady would replied, her gentle blue eyes widening yet she was laughing in the inside. " Through all my life there had never been a single moment that our world was not so pathetic. You see, when I was young I was beautiful. All the young man," she paused with a gentle sigh, " were all over me. I had to admit that I was a little arrogant at that time to not answer any of those proposes. But when I really made my mind to marry, I was thirty five. Thirty Five wasn't an old age was it? Yet they all disgraced me as if I was nothing but garbage. Which is why I live alone, my dear. Until a couple nice gentleman with a true heart came to me," she would pause and crept a tiny smile. " to stay." " That was not what I wished for," Billy said as fear gripped his heart as he finally realized what the landlady was plotting all this time. " You simply can not escape me, dear."the Landlady smiled widely, revealing her even white teeth. " Even if you escaped me physically, your heart can not," she stopped and starred at Billy's startled face. " You are here, to stay." For a moment, Billy considered what life would be like with the landlady. Drinking tea, baking fresh biscuits, no more lame business trips to lame country sides, no more pressure, just...well peace. Even if he escaped, he would have to face the ugly world again. With so many flaws and errors that he can not correct. He would have to go report to the office, hear the long lecture from his boss and even get fired. Than what would be of him? Wondering in the streets with nothing but a stuffed suitcase? Would he have to hitch hike back to London? Suddenly, Billy just couldn't bare it anymore. The world is simply to ugly for him to live in. " I don't have a choice, right? " he asked after taking a very deep breath. " No, I must say, dear." The landlady said, her ever lasting smile never wavering. " Very well than, I suppose I'll stay."Wonderful, dear!" the landlady said calmly, "but now you would have to leave the guest room to our, ah, nice little permanent room." Without waiting for his response, she took Billy's hand and lead the way upstairs. She didn't even pause at the guest room where Billy's suitcase was. " But my suitcase..." Billy started, but the landlady silented him with a hard stare. " There will be no need, my dear." she added sweetly. After the staircases that seemed like forever, they finally arrived at the room. The landlady the door and Billy noticed six beds tucked neatly. And two men had already conquered two of them. The landlady lead Billy to the bed next to them and tucked him into bed. She done it rather forceful though and fear gripped Billy's heart once again and he felt like he would suffocate. His mind ran through the images of the Landlady and her house. And all the time they have spent together. Finally his mind settled on the image of a stuffed dog and parrot. He struggled, but finding himself can not move. He opened his mouth into a silent scream. " Good night Mr. Temple, Mr. ah..your name is way too difficult...um Christopher," the landlady turned to Billy who had lose the ability to open his eyes. " and good night Billy."

Stuffed Pets
The chilly reception the Landlady had told Billy, " I stuff all my little pets myself when they passed away." suggested that Billy was falling into the Landlady's trap of, as ironic as it sounds, being stuffed and kept forever. Just like the two other guests before him, and many that may follow in his footsteps. I felt very much sorry for Billy and the two other gentlemen in the story, having a bright future in front of them yet ended their lives earlier than they were supposed to. Just because they entered the Landlady's deadly little trap like blind rats.
This story not only expressed deadly schemes and terror, but also taught the readers a very important lesson: There is no such thing as a free lunch. No one would just be nice to you without a reason. Many heroes and story characters had proven that, just like Billy had. And when there is a person who is being nice to you without a reason (though sometimes you can make an exception for your family and friends), you better let your guard up. That is not saying you should simply avoid every single kind person you've ever met, just to beware of their actions and do not trust them entirely until you felt that you can trust them entirely. After all, there are some people really do gain contentment by extending others a helping hand. The main literal device the story used was the element of Foreshadowing and was very successful. The story seemed to always arouse the reader’s interests, and most of us were pretty frustrated, since we did not find out what had happened to Billy afterwards.

The Landlady's perfect guest.
According to the observations I have made from the story, the perfect guest for the Landlady has to be qualified with the majors below. First of all, they have to be men. No ladies are acceptable. Second of all, the guests have to be in early adulthood. And lastly, and most importantly, the gentleman’s have to be tall and elegant, with a handsome face and a fine attitude. Only the finest men are allowed. I believe the two guests are murdered; yet their souls are not free. The landlady must have trapped and enslave them somehow, since she had mentioned to Billy that the two guests are still at her little adorable house. And I had a bad feeling that Billy is on his way to the same destination. The reason that I had this belief is because of the odd way the landlady seemed to behave that sets are apart from the other landladies all over the world. Noticed when Billy was looking through the guest book and the names rang a bell? Well, it also rings a bell for me. It was not the name that I seemed to recall, but the realization that the Landlady is not what she seemed to be. And she is lulling Billy into a horrible traps that he will regret for eternity. And of course, her odd behavior and the cheapness of her “ Bed and Breakfast” also arose my suspicion.

The Landlady- Prediction
I started to suspect that there was something fathered odd about the Landlady, when she asked Billy to basement. What really surprised me is not simply of the Landlady asking Billy to the basement, but Billy himself not noticing something was about to go terribly wrong. His having no sense of danger had surprised me, but that also made me feeling more sure than ever that there is diffidently something wrong with the Landlady. And probably Billy too. I made a lot of predictions in this story, and none of them are quite positive. My first prediction, which is that the Landlady was not normal and she may do harm to Billy afterwards. The prediction was not yet proven in the story, but I have a sense that the interesting part is coming up. My second prediction is that the two guests that had once entered the Landlady's home was now trapped forever on her forth floor, bond with her for eternity. This prediction sadly was not yet proven as well. But have you seen any guests in a Bed and Breakfast stay for year round? That often arouses suspicion. The third prediction is that there is something wrong with that cup of tea the Landlady has Billy. Since Billy had noted that it tasted bitter, yet strangely he didn't mind. Judging from the Landlady's weird behavior and my previous prediction, the tea is probably designed to make Billy a slave or servant, or thing that the Landlady can now openly claim of her own. This prediction is also not proven, yet. But I believe it will soon be. If the Holt Reader had not cut the story short. My last prediction is that Billy will probably be trapped like the other two unfortunate guests; I thought this prediction was pretty reasonable, but it was also not yet proven since the story was cutted short. Blame the Holt Reader for none of my prediction was yet proven. But I have a feeling. As you read on of the story of the Landlady, you will see them coming true before your very own eyes.

Bed and breakfast
The features that I would expect to see through the land lady's window will be a warm and inviting environment. I expected there to be wooden floor, with a crimson carpet laid on the top. Two green sofas displayed near the burning hearth, and each contained two yellow pillows. The lighting will be a soft yellow, and there are candles lit up all over the place. There will be a small rectangular table on the side of the red carpet that stood with six chairs made out of red wood. A fine white tablecloth lay on the table with six napkins each folded neatly. Shining metallic spoons and forks casts dancing shadows over at the edge of the table, and of course, at the center of the table is a candle. A bookcase laid near the sofa with books the color of red, violet, velvet, and dark brown. All books very organized and a pair of wooden glasses will be displayed at the center. Aside from the furniture and settings, I expect to see young children playing on carpet. Their laughter ringing like tinkling bells. An elder woman will be seated on the green sofa, watching the kids having their fun with a kind smile on her face. On the other side of the sofa, seated an elder man with a book in his hand. One of his hands was on a child's head, encouraging the child to go on no matter what. Generally, I would expect to see a warming scene in the house that can warm up any frozen heart from any kinds of severe weather of cold.

" Broken Chain" Thinking Critically
In my opinion, most thirteen and fourteen year olds tends to think negatively about them. Instead of appreciating what they do have, they often grieve about what they do not claim. Very few felt confident about themselves, and almost none are happy with what they are. Alfonso tends to feel the same way. Instead of appreciating his excellence, he worried about his disadvantages such as him having crooked teeth.
He didn't appreciate himself fully, which can be one of the reasons he went wild before his first date. Alfonso's behavior and feelings seemed very reasonable to me, since he was acting shy and unconfident around the opposite gender. He was unsure of himself, and wanted advices and support from experienced friends (Someone just like his brother. He was thinking about asking for his advice). His behavior was common for all thirteen and fourteen year olds, and there are very few exceptions. Since being in your thirteen/fourteens meant that you are still discovering the potential of yourself. So you wouldn't be as knowledgeable and sure as a fifteen year old or as carefree and clueless as a twelve year old. At the middle between high school and middle school. The perfect stage for self discoverence. This meant that a lot of thirteen and fourteen year olds still have no knowledge of their full potential, what they can really do. This is why they can be shy around the opposite gender, or unconfident of what they do, just like Alfonso.

This is why they can be shy around the opposite gender, or unconfident of what they do, just like Alfonso.

Advice letter
Dear Ms. Helpful:
My name is Alfonso and I am a seventh grader in the states. I am a loyal reader of yours and I enjoyed reading your advice column very much. You advices always seemed so encouraging and just as your pen name stated-helpful, which is the reason that I wrote to you today to discuss a problem of my own.
I decided to not drag on the embarrassment that I, myself contained by the moment and went right to the point: I am in love. With a girl that was my age, and lived in my neighborhood. Her name, which I had hesitate of keeping anonymous, but didn't at the end, was Sandra. Our encounter as chance would have it, is plainly by luck. There was this one day that I was pedaling down the street, when I noticed a boy hanging upside down with a girl looking up at him. My instinct took over right away, and the next thing I knew I jumped off my bike and helped the kid off the barbed-wired fence. Both the boy and the girl was grateful to me, and we became friends. I later learned that the girl happened to be the little kid's sister, and we go to the same school, her name(which I have to repeat again) is Sandra. She has straight teeth unlike mine, and is kind of cute with a ponytail. I really liked Sandra, and we went on a little date, or should I say, we hanged out? She was always friendly and amicable. Her laughter soft. I wanted badly to impress her, but unsure of what to do. What can I do to impress her, Ms. Helpful? Even though I don't know that much about girls, I know they sure do judge a boy by his cover, and I am not exactly super star handsome. I have crooked teeth, which is a pity. So, I was wondering what I can do to impress Sandra. And what I can do to get her to hang out with me more often. Oh, and should I ask her to an official date? Most of all, I want to ask you ways to impress a girl like Sandra and how do I know if she liked me or did she just wanted to be "friends"? I would love to have my questions answered right away, but please do not put this letter on the top of your advice column. Sandra might see that, she reads the sports news.
Sincerely,
You loyal reader-Alfonso

Broken Chain: Thinking Critically
The story- Broken Chain is told by a boy's point of view. What feelings that Alfonso has that girls share? Whenever people thought about the two opposite genders, they always imagined a great difference between the two sexes. The difference that people list out is not only physical but mental as well. Are girls really this different from boys? Actually, no. Since girls tends to share the same thoughts as boys does. In this story, Alfonso is going on his first date and felt nervous and shy. He wanted to look his best, and was worried that the girl wouldn't like him. Girls tend to have similar behavior before they are going on dates. They often spent hours trying to put together an outfit that is just right, and request their friends to send them text messages as a confidence boost. Other than the reckless worries, both sexes tend to be shy when their crushes are around. They wanted the other person to speak out first before they do, because they often don’t know what their dates like to hear. And lastly, stating the obvious- both girls and boys wanted a romantic date and an awesome time to spend with their crushes alone. Which is the reason that couples are always grumpy when they are interrupted. In conclusion, a girl tends to share a lot of feeling with boys especially when it came to dates. They both are shy, unsecured about their looks, and wanted to have a great time. I suppose that will be the feeling of love.

Popularity v Intelligence
The world that we know of is full of competitions. All around the globe, people comtrast about their money, skills, their life, and their fourtunes. Competition, however doesn't only exist in adulthood. Go over the school fence and you will quickly realize that competition is everywhere here, too. " What do innocent students contrast about?" You may ask. Well, that is a great question, because the life of a student is never as innocent and carefree as it seemed. There is a lot of competition going on in here too, which meant there there is going to be winners, and losers. Students compete about a lot of things, and the two biggest catergory they compete about is: Inteligence and Popularity.
Both topics will be disguessed indivisually in this document, and we will start with intelligence. Intelligence is capacity for learning, reasoning, understanding, and similar forms of mental activity; aptitude in grasping truths, relationships, facts, and meanings. Having intelligence is a great advantage that one can have. You will be able to see things before the others do, and make the most lucrative, or beneficial decession. You will be ahead of everyone. There is a downhill doen hill side for having intelligence, though. Other students might be jeolous of your intelligence, and your social status might be lowered simply because you are smarter than some others.
Popularity, on the otherhand, is an entirely different matter. It is to have favor of the general public or of a particular group of people. Being popular can mean a lot of things. But most of all, it meant to be accepted by society. To be welcomed everywhere. People wanted to be near you, and you can join any group there is that you wanted, and everyone will open their arms welcomging you. It is a common thing that people wanted. There is also a downhill side for popularity. People may also get jeolous of how well you are doing and try to pull you down. If their plan succeeded, your social life will land on the botton of the heep, only to be surrounded by geeks and goths people looked down at.
If there is only two choices of popularity and inteligence, I would rather be popular. Yes, I do want to be smart, but no, I don't want to be left out of the crowd. I suppose I just cannot stand to be alone. Popularity brings you more friends and gives you more interactions with people. Which is what I'd rather have.
There are very few who liked to be alone and different. Most people tends to want to fit in to the place that they are in. They tends to have to sacrifice a lot to do so, though. The sacrifices includes: pretanding to be dumb inorder to get rid of the nicknames, ditch their old best friend just because they are not cool enoguh, trying to perform a performence that you are not capable of doing and so on. Those are all sacrifices people make inorder to fit into a new comunity. They may regret their sacrefices later on, but their sacrifices had been made for them to fit in.
No matter if you are an intelligent person, or a popular person, you stand out from the crowd. Meaning that you are the unusual. Being unusual can be both good and bad. The good thing about being unusual is that you are not the same as everyone else, you get your own unique personality and skills that the others cannot replace. You are special, never invisilble. Of course. there are downhill sides of being unusual as well. Since you tends to stand out from the crowd, you are easier to pick on, since you are the abnormal in a pool of normals. Which, can be very troubling for most people.
Both popularity and intelligence has it's own strength and weakness, but both is all about being unusual. It doesn't really matter though, since everyone is unique. So I suppose, you should simply live the life that you enjoyed, since there is not particular right or wrong in this matter.

English Assigment Assignment 1(Broken Chain assignemnt)
Feelings and thinkings of a thirteen fourteen year olds can be complicated. They have so many things to worry about. They have to worry about how others think about them, how their teachers thinks about them, and most importantly, how "they" think about themselves.
The most general feeling for a thirteen/fourteen year old is negative. Most of them yarned for things that they do not have, instead of what they do have. Thirteen/fourteen year olds can worry about all sorts of things, such as their height, looks, smartness, and popularity. They all thought they have less than others, and tried their best to copy their leader, or idol. There are a very few thirteen/fourteen year olds , however tells a very different story. Instead of looking at what they don't have, they felt proud of themselves, too proud of themselves actually. They act bossy, and expected for full leadership of what they thought they are good at. Which can create problems.
Both kinds of people have their own pros and cons, I suppose it is yours to decided which one you really do belong.

This blog is made "specifically" for Grade 8 English Class , in other words, this blog is basically homework. This blog will be used for weekly writeups, essay writtings, and other assignemts. Personel comments can also be posted if wanted to, though highly doubt it. Anyway, this is the first year which english assignemts can be written on blogs, so I am a little excited.
